Partnership for 21st century Skills

I found the website to be very interesting with so much information to read and view.  I liked the videos I viewed and the webinar titles were of interest to me. The website has a lot of valuable free infomation and a lot of information to be purchased.  The P21 newsletter seemed interesting.  The common core toolkit is available to down load and I believe that is a good resource for teachers to have in their library. This website appears to be a collaborative effort from many sources with information to assist  every teacher in every discipline. there was so much information on the site talking about assessment, curriculum and instruction that I did not know where to begin reading.  My mind was racing trying to keep up with all I was looking at and wanting to read about. One of the things I am going to do with this information is share it with all teachers I come in contact with and I am going to take a look at the manner in which I assess my students as well as my lesson plans to incorporate more of the things this website talks about.  I want to be one of the teachers involved with preparing my students for the 21st century and beyond. I did not find anything I did  not like about the site, I just did not like the fact that I would have to pay to read some of the articles I wanted to read right then and before I could read them I had to purchase them. I know that it takes money to keep this site updated and this is probably one of the ways they are able to fund it so it is not really a dislike but an observation.  The reality of this is that we as teachers and educators must find a way, despite the limited funds and all of the other obstacles to help our students understand how important it is to develop problem solving skills, creativity, decision making skills, communication skills and all of the other skills they will need to be prepared for the type of jobs available in this global economy.  We must teach and design our lessons in manner that the student will want to take ownership in their learning.  The students have to see the value in the lesson for it to mean something to them.  We as educators must make these lessons real world lessons and have the students work in groups to find out the answers/solutions they need. This website is a wonderful resource for educators and parents in particular and anyone who is interested in helping students be successful.

  1. I like your post. I agree with you that there is very little to dislike about the website. The video is informative and I downloaded the p21 Common Core toolkit. I do have a concern that p21 is a good idea and hopefully wants to do better than NCLB. I am concerned about the way students are assessed and that not all students can be properly assessed by a standardized test. P21 seems to adress this.

The videos for sale on the p21 site are outrageously expensive for individuals. Maybe they are meant for a school district to purchase. I am not sure.

    Thank you for you post

  2. You blog post really sums up that teachers need to jump on board, regardless of the school district population and bring these kids to today's technology. Most of our schools have computers of some sort, that's better than nothing. Now, we need to all be on the lookout for the next great App or website (that are free, and they are out there!) and apply them to our daily learning. For those websites that are not free, many offer 30 days of a free trial, which is a great way to see if students like and how it applies to the new Common Core Standards. Teachers can learn right along with the students.

The P21 site allows us as educators to know that we are not alone, there are many more with thoughts, wishes and dreams just like us. We need to utilize this site and come together, although I wished that the articles were not pay as you go (that was not their bright spot), but nonetheless, we need to use this site to broaden our horizons and see what a group can do!

  3. I agree that this site provides a wealth of resources that a person would need at least a full day to explore and be able to fully utilize. While it is discouraging that a fee is required to view some of the material, at least there is a good amount of information free and readily available for people to read.

The world is quickly changing due to technology and its uses. As educators, we need to keep up with this change in a way that is both comfortable for us as well as engaging for our students. I agree with your thoughts about what we need to do in order to prepare our students for the 21st century world. It seems as if this site will give us the right framework to use in order to achieve that goal.

  4. I agree with you. We as educators need to find a way to teach our students these necessary skills. We need them to take responsibility of their own learning and be able to apply their learning. We need to present them with more real world applications. I am looking forward to looking into more of the P21 resources. I am hoping that it will give me ideas that I can start to implement into my classroom now.

  5. Tonya--you say it perfectly--students need to feel ownership of their learning if they are going to be self-directed problem solvers. The workplace of today and tomorrow expects lifelong learners and creative problem solvers. Preparing our students for this will help ensure they are successful as adults. This means providing problem solving opportunities in the context of content. Technology can be a helpful tool for bring authentic, situated activities to our classrooms.

Thank you for sharing on your blog.

  6. Thanks so much writing up your review of P21 and sharing this information on your blog!
I wanted to get in touch and find out what articles you were prompted to pay for, as P21 does not charge for materials. If there's something specific you were looking for, I would be happy to make it available to you. Some materials may have been developed by external partners, and they may charge. I would love to ensure that our resources are as widely available as possible!
    Thanks again,
